Buies Creek, N.C.-A job in Campbell University’s Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences as a lab technician and instructor has been good experience for Casey Langdon, but it is only the first step in a lifelong career in research he intends to pursue. Langdon has been accepted into Yale University’s prestigious Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) program and will begin a five and one-half year journey toward a Ph.D. in research in September.
“I’d like to do ion channel or maybe even cancer research,” Langdon said. “There is so much variety in the Yale program, it is difficult to decide. Lately I’ve been leaning toward cancer research.”
Yale’s interdepartmental combined program gives students access to more than 260 biological science faculties in all departments at both the School of Medicine and on the main campus. Broad in scope, the program provides graduate education in modern biological and biomedical sciences that serves as a focal point for research, education and career development in the biological sciences. BBS degree candidates receive a stipend which provides full tuition, health coverage and a yearly allotment for travel to scientific meetings or courses.
The current biological and biomedical science fields have become more complex and demanding than ever before, Langdon explained. To be a success, a scientist can no longer be an expert in only one field but must be able to use information, technologies and experimental strategies across the scientific spectrum.
“This is a great educational opportunity,” said Langdon, who would eventually like to return to academia and work at a large research university. “I am really honored to be accepted into the Yale program.”
A native of Coats, N.C., Langdon graduated from Campbell University with a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and biology in May 2008. He has worked as a lab technician and lab instructor in biology and chemistry in the School of Pharmacy’s Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences since that time. Langdon is the son of David and Teressa Langdon.
