Campbell University graduate, Travis Hellstrom, accepted an invitation to serve in the Peace Corps. He graduated in May 2007 with a degree in Biology and a concentration in pre-medicine. He applied to serve in the Peace Corps in early 2007 and was accepted in the spring of 2007.Hellstrom will serve in Mongolia as a Health Extension Volunteer. He leaves on May 31 and will serve for 27 months. His primary activities will include: Creating and developing health education and awareness activities and workshops for schools, community members and professionals. Training local health volunteers to work in schools and communities. Designing sessions and training programs in public health awareness and education. Organizing local and regional seminars to improve the skills of local health educators. Participating in the Peace Corps initiative to teach Life Skills to teachers, students and disenfranchised youth. Promoting HIV/AIDS awareness and education activities.”I have always wanted to learn more about international development and become more involved in our United States foreign diplomacy,” Hellstrom said. “I look forward to the opportunity to use my knowledge, experiences and skills to help people on the other side of the world. I am very excited.”His hope is that the Peace Corps will guide him to the right profession as he plans to attend graduate school after his service. Hellstrom is an Eagle Scout, as well as served as the Hickory Youth Council Chairman in 2002-2003.
