Buies Creek, N.C.— Nine student athletes participated in a special graduation ceremony Wed., May 18 in the Robert B. and Anna Gardner Butler Chapel of Campbell University. Due to athletic travel commitments for the baseball and softball teams, the students were unable to participate in Saturday’s commencement ceremony at the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center with their peers.
Campbell University president Jerry M. Wallace encouraged the graduates to use the lessons they’ve learned as members of an athletic teams.
“You’ve learned a lot from team sports. You gave yourself for the larger group. You’ve played individually, but for the larger team,” said Wallace. “Learning that lesson, along with a good liberal arts education, will serve you well as you leave this place and enter the working world.”
Melinda Ashcraft, associate athletics director for academic support, helped to coordinate the ceremony for these student athletes. “A graduation ceremony is an important milestone for any student,” said Ashcraft. “This ceremony was personal and intimate. It will be a moment these students and parents will not soon forget.”
