Buies Creek, N.C.-Campbell University will hold the second annual Walter S. Barge Honors Colloquium, sponsored by the Honors Program at Campbell, on Tuesday, April 13, from 5-7:30 p.m. in Room 206 of Kivett Hall.
Established in honor of the late Walter S. Barge, former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Barge Colloquium showcases the work of outstanding honors students in a presentation and question and answer format.
Under the direction of faculty mentors, students present research they have conducted in a variety of fields, from politics and history to the latest scientific developments. This year’s presenters include Rachel Sharpton, “Reconstructing the Past: Reflections on the J.A. Campbell House and Primary Buildings of Campbell University;” Douglas Campen, “The European Union You;” and Jonathan Howard, “Diagnosis, Cure and Treatment Options in Sports Medicine.”
A question and answer session will follow the presentations.
Dr. Walter S. Barge served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1984-2001. Under his leadership, the college not only earned a reputation for teaching excellence but for its outstanding arts and sciences program. As director of the self-study for reaccreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Barge led the university through two important accreditations, and he supervised revisions in university’s core curriculum as Arts and Sciences dean. He is the founder of the university’s Honors program and played an important role in the integration of faith and learning into the Campbell mission. Barge passed away in 2009.
