Campbell honors unsung heroes with scholarships

With conflict in the Middle East, the war hero is talked about on a daily basis, but what about their spouse behind the scenes?

Campbell University’s Camp Lejeune campus held a Spouse Scholarship Appreciation Day on March 5, 2009. President Wallace was the guest of honor and he lauded the sacrifices made by military spouses and Campbell’s commitment to provide opportunities for military service members and their families to reach their higher education goals.

“We deeply appreciate the military spouses,” said Lee Milliner, extended campus Director at Camp Lejeune. “The spouses are the unsung hero–maintaining the home, caring for children and encouraging their deployed military member.”

Milliner further noted that 75% of military spouses state that the cost of continuing their education is more than they can afford.

During AY 08-09, Campbell offered a scholarship to spouses of active duty Marines and Sailors that are stationed at Camp Lejeune. This scholarship covers over half of their tuition expenses.

“The purpose of this scholarship is to show our support to the military spouse,” said Susan Moyer, academic advisor. “We appreciate what they do for the military on the home front.”

History professor George Speth said American society has provided benefits for military families since the Revolutionary War and we should continue this tradition.

“These families deserve it,” he said.

Sixty-four students are taking advantage of the scholarship. Melissa Smile is studying psychology and plans to graduate in 2010.

“This is an opportunity you won’t always have,” said Smile. “You can’t turn this down. It’s a wonderful gift.”

“Campbell has supported the educational needs of this community for 25 years,” said Milliner. “This program shows our commitment.”
