Campbell hosts Full Tuition Scholarship Competition

Buies Creek–On Saturday, March 24, Campbell University hosted its 2007 Full Tuition Scholarship Competition. Of the 115 competitors representing 14 states, four students were selected to have their current Presidential Scholarship award increased to cover four years of tuition costs at Campbell University. The winners of the competition were Jonathan Blosser, Brittany Brown, Mary Hedges, and Sean Mardis.The Full Tuition Scholarship Competition is an invitation-only event. To qualify, all competitors must have applied by December 2006. In addition, students were required to have a SAT score of at least a 1200 with only the math and critical reading sections being considered.All competitors had already been awarded the Presidential Scholarship, a merit-based academic scholarship whose criteria includes both test score standards as well as cumulative high school GPA requirements. Presidential Scholars, on average, represent the top 10-15% of their high school class.During the competition, each student participated in a lengthy interview and learned about the university’s Honors Program and Study Abroad opportunities. Students at the competition were also granted the opportunity to meet with their academic adviser and arrange their schedules for the fall.A completely separate program was planned to give the competitors’ parents an insight into the areas of academics, student life opportunities, and financial aid at Campbell University. The competition concluded with a formal luncheon honoring the students, their parents, and the faculty, alumni and currently enrolled students who comprised the interviewing teams.Jonathan Paul Blosser is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Paul Blosser of Newport News, Va. He attends Hampton Christian School. J.P., as he is known to his friends, plans to major in the pre-professional track in the Biology Department of Campbell University with his ultimate goal being medical school specializing in orthopedics. He became interested in this career when teams of physicians participated in a mission trip to El Salvador and the amazing outcome of their training made a difference in others’ lives. Jonathan enjoys being involved in different sporting events with soccer being his favorite extracurricular activity.Brittany Renee Brown is the daughter of Larry Scott Brown and Emily W. Foss, and she resides in Morganton, N.C., with her mother. She attends Freedom High School. Britt, as she is known to her friends and family, plans to begin her studies in the pre-pharmacy curriculum in the fall with a final goal of entering the Doctor of Pharmacy Program offered at Campbell. During the competition, Britt identified her mother as having the strongest impact on her career choice because of her analytical thinking in the areas of math and science and her willingness to go the extra mile. She is involved in many extracurricular activities in her school and community.Mary Candace Hedges is the daughter of Reverend and Mrs. Richard Clyde Hedges and resides in Durham, N.C. She attends Southern Durham High School. Mary plans to participate in the Trust and Investment Management curriculum offered in the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business at Campbell University. Her activities and interests indicate she is well rounded. In her spare time, she is a volunteer with the American Red Cross, Second Chance Pet Adoptions, and the North Carolina Museum of Art as a member of their Visitor Service Team. Mary also serves as President of her high school Art Club and Sign Language Club.Sean Mardis is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Carter Mardis and resides in Indianapolis, Ind. He attends Brownsburg High School. Sean plans to begin his studies in the pre-pharmacy curriculum in the fall with a desire to enter the Doctor of Pharmacy program offered at Campbell. He became interested in this career path when his father’s health issues were improved by technology and medication. Sean has broadened his high school curriculum by participating in study abroad opportunities and hopes to incorporate this into his curriculum at Campbell.
