Campbell Law adds 11 to Board of Visitors

RALEIGH, N.C. – Campbell Law Dean J. Rich Leonard announced today the addition of 11 legal and industry leaders to the law school’s Board of Visitors. Teresa Artis, The Honorable Stephani Humrickhouse, The Honorable Elaine Marshall, The Honorable Mark Martin, Claire Moritz, Dr. Peter Morris, Gary Shipman, Timothy Sparks, Hoyt Tessener, Wendy Vonnegut and Thomas Walker will all serve two-year terms on the board.

Artis is a member of the Intellectual Property Rights Team at TWR, a 60-year old global media ministry that uses broadcast, web and mobile platforms to reach people in over 160 countries with inspirational content in over 220 languages. She works with staff and outside IP counsel developing and implementing strategies for IP compliance worldwide, especially related to digital media distribution. She has also drafted and reviewed production, content acquisition and content distribution agreements between TWR, global content providers and global distribution partners. Formerly, she was General Counsel for Capital Broadcasting.

Chief Judge Humrickhouse serves as the Chief United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Eastern District of North Carolina. She has served on the bench since January 6, 2010. She presently serves on various committees of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, including the International Judicial Relations Committee and the Cost Containment Committee.

A 1981 graduate of Campbell Law, Marshall has served as North Carolina’s Secretary of State since 1997. She was the first woman ever elected to a state-wide, executive branch office in North Carolina. In October 2014 Marshall was honored with Campbell University’s Distinguished Alumni Award. She will serve as Campbell Law’s commencement speaker in May 2015.

Chief Justice Mark Martin of the North Carolina Supreme Court recently won re-election to his post after being appointed by Governor Pat McCrory. With more than 20 years of judicial service, Chief Justice Martin is the only active member of the North Carolina state judiciary with experience on the Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, and Superior Court.

Moritz has served as the Vice President, Legal Services/General Counsel at WakeMed in Raleigh since March 1986. In her role, she advises the Board of Directors, reports to the Chief Executive Officer, is responsible for providing legal counsel and guidance regarding multi-campus system activities to ensure maximum protection of the legal rights of the organization, and to maintain its operations within the limits prescribed by law.

Dr. Morris is a practicing pediatrician and preventive medicine specialist. He is Executive Director of Urban Ministries of Wake County, an interfaith non-profit organization that collaborates with volunteers, staff, clients and community to advocate and serve families affected by poverty through programs in hunger, homelessness, and healthcare. As an epidemiologist and public health professional, Dr. Morris was Medical Director of Wake County Human Services in Raleigh for more than 25 years.

A 1980 Campbell Law graduate, Shipman is the Managing Partner of Shipman & Wright, LLP, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Since 2008, Shipman has devoted a substantial portion of his practice to business reorganization and workouts, representing both debtors and creditors. He has extensive expertise in matters involving lender liability, representing both borrowers and lenders. More recently, he has been engaged as a consultant by individuals, businesses and investors in the acquisition or sale of a variety of asset types.

Sparks, a 1995 Campbell Law graduate, is Associate General Counsel for Sonic Automotive, Inc., a publicly traded Fortune 500 company and one of the nation’s largest automotive retailers based in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is responsible for all litigation for Sonic and its subsidiary entities. When not focusing on litigation, Sparks also assists in nearly every aspect of legal operations including: employment, contracts, real estate, compliance and corporate governance.

Tessener, a 1988 Campbell Law graduate, leads the personal injury section of Martin & Jones, PLLC, in Raleigh. He works on personal injury cases involving serious automobile accidents, nursing home neglect, medical malpractice, fraud and product liability claims. He has extensive experience representing people seriously injured in trucking collisions.

Vonnegut is the Director of Legal Studies at Methodist University. She also serves as an Associate Professor and PreLaw Advisor. She currently chairs the Conflict Management Committee, is a member of the Tenure and Promotion Committee, and is Chair-Elect of the Prelaw Advisors National Council. In addition to Methodist University, Vonnegut has taught at Saint Ambrose University, Fayetteville Technical Community College, and Webster University.

A 1990 Campbell Law graduate, Walker was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina. He was confirmed by the United States Senate and took the oath of office from Chief United States District Judge James C. Dever III. Walker oversees all federal criminal and civil matters in the 44 eastern counties of North Carolina. His staff includes approximately 43 Assistant United States Attorneys and 57 support personnel.

In addition to the 11 professionals, three first-year Campbell Law students – Austin Entwistle, Jacob Morse and Casey Peaden – join the board in an ex-officio capacity. Each of the three are recipients of highly competitive, full-tuition scholarships.

A dynamic group, the board assists the dean, faculty, and leadership in developing and evaluating strategic planning efforts and launching new initiatives. The group also serves as a sounding board to review ideas, while helping to develop and foster important relationships throughout the legal and business community, nonprofit organizations, higher education and government agencies in an effort to enhance all aspects of the law school.
