RALEIGH — A survey of law school externship programs in the September 2013 edition of The National Jurist found that Campbell Law School’s program ranks 27th nationally for percentage of total student body participation in externships. Campbell Law ranked highest among the seven North Carolina law schools.
Eighty-five percent of recent Campbell Law graduates completed one or more externships with corporate, government, non-profit, and pro bono private practice employers.
“Our externship program has grown by leaps and bounds in the last several years, and we are fortunate that it has paid such dividends for our students as they graduate and enter the workplace,” said Campbell Law Professor of Law and externship program director Margaret Currin.
The Campbell Law externship program, which began with the 1990-91 academic year, allows students to experience the law and learn by doing. As externs, Campbell Law students gain hands-on experience participating and observing in the everyday practice of law alongside a licensed attorney for academic credit. Externship placements within the program have grown by more than 380 percent since the law school relocated to Raleigh in 2009.
A small snapshot of recent externship placements at Campbell Law include BB&T, Disability Rights N.C., Duke Energy, Legal Aid of N.C., N.C. Board of Pharmacy, N.C. Court of Appeals, N.C. Department of Justice, N.C. Prisoner Legal Services, State and Federal Public Defender’s Offices, Supreme Court of N.C., Wake County Superior Court, and multiple district attorneys’ offices.
