RALEIGH, N.C. –A team of Campbell Law School students recently finished in the final four of the Buffalo-Niagara Mock Trial Competition among 32 teams. Coached by Campbell Law Professor Dan Tilly, students Keith Gordon, Leesa Poag, Andrew Shores, and Melanie Turnbull performed well against extraordinarily strong opponents. Three of the four participating Campbell Law students were taking part in their very first trial competition.
The Buffalo-Niagara Mock Trial Competition is an annual invitational-only tournament that routinely features some of the very best law schools and trial team competitors from across the country. This year’s competition involved a criminal case with allegations of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
“In addition to their outstanding trial advocacy skills, our students exhibited the highest levels of professionalism and composure in the courtroom,” said Tilly. “The coach of the Northwestern team went so far as to send a note to the director of the competition, letting him know that the Campbell Law team was not only the most talented team they faced throughout the competition, but also the most professional and friendly. As their coach, I am extremely proud of all of them.”
The Campbell Law delegation faced teams from the University of Georgia, Pacific, and Northwestern University during the preliminary rounds. Two of those opponents, the University of Georgia and Northwestern University, joined Campbell Law in the final four.
Campbell Law defeated the University of Houston in the round of 16, later taking down the State University of New York at Buffalo in the round of eight.
Campbell Law fell very narrowly to St. John’s University in the final four, losing on ballots 2-1 despite receiving more overall points for the round. Northwestern University ultimately defeated St. John’s University to win the competition.
