RALEIGH – Campbell Law School hosted 18 schools last weekend for the second annual North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Ethics Bowl.
Methodist University and Wake Forest University finished first and second respectively in the competition, which is designed to increase student awareness about applying ethics in leadership, decision-making, interpersonal relationships and other issues in today’s society. It’s purpose – to emphasize the importance of being able to apply ethical standards to situations students inevitably will face in their upcoming professional careers.
“Ethics Bowl offers our students an extraordinary opportunity to dialog with other top-notch students from around the state on real-life moral dilemmas,” said Campbell associate professor of theology and philosophy Adam English, who also heads Campbell’s ethics team. “In addition to that, they make invaluable connections with Raleigh business leaders who volunteer their time to serve as judges and moderators.”
The theme for this year’s competition was “Ethics in Communications,” and other competing schools included Chowan, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Johnson C. Smith, Livingstone College, Mars Hill College, Meredith College, Montreat College, Mount Olive College, Pfeiffer, St. Andrews, Saint Augustine’s, Salem College, Shaw and Wingate.
“The students put a great deal of time and effort in preparation for the competition,” said coordinator Nicole Porter of St. Augustine’s. Referring to one her students, Shanyria Cook, Porter said, “The competition helped her understand that being yourself and comfortable in your own skin is the best way to win.”
And hosting the competition was a benefit for Campbell University and its law school, according to Britt Davis, vice president for advancement at Campbell.
“Any time you’re able to host students of this caliber from 18 schools in our region, it’s a great opportunity to display what makes your institution great and unique,” Davis said. “I think the competitors enjoyed their time in Raleigh and were impressed with the hospitality provided by Campbell.”
Event sponsors included BB&T, Duke Energy, UPS and Wells Fargo AT&T, Burlington Industries /International Textile Group, Inc., Dominion NC Power, First Citizens Bank, Fidelity Investments, Martin Marietta Materials, Ads Infinitum, BCWH Architects, Piedmont Natural Gas and Theo Davis Printing.
