RALEIGH, N.C. – Campbell Law School and the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) will partner to host a three-day continuing legal education (CLE) program at the law school, May 9-11. Campbell Law graduates interested in attending will receive a 15% discount from the standard program cost.
Campbell Law Professor of Law Jean Cary will serve as the program director. Cary, who joined the Campbell Law faculty in 1991, is a leading teacher and scholar in the field of depositions. She has taught family law, pretrial litigation, trial advocacy, and interviewing and counseling.
The deposition skills program will put participants in a realistic deposition setting and provide an opportunity for them to discover the questioning style that best fits their personality and skills. Using NITA’s unique “funnel technique,” participants will practice and perfect the skills of:
* Eliciting exhaustive, expansive answers
* Theory testing during depositions
* Identifying other useful witnesses and documents
* Closing off avenues of escape
* Successfully dealing with obstreperous counsel
* Knowing when, and how, to object when defending a deposition
* Gaining admissions and information for use at trial or during negotiations
* Witness preparation
A stellar faculty comprised of lawyers, judges, professors, and consultants will lead the program, including Peter Hoffman, co-author of “The Effective Deposition: Techniques and Strategies That Work.”
The program, estimated at 18 CLE hours, qualifies as one credit toward the NITA Advocate Designation.
