RALEIGH – Campbell Law School will offer an intensive three-day Continuing Legal Education (CLE) course on the effective use of expert witnesses before and during a trial on Oct. 8-10, Dean J. Rich Leonard has announced.

The comprehensive program offers attorneys a unique opportunity to develop and refine their skills in working with expert witnesses through both theoretical instruction and hands-on practical exercises, says Chris Cox, director of Campbell Law’s Advocacy Program.

The course is designed to provide attorneys with real-world experience in consulting with actual experts and conducting direct and cross-examinations in a realistic trial setting, Cox said. Participants will engage in a complex mock case involving a fatality in an automobile collision, working directly with practicing experts to understand the nuances of expert testimony from both preparation and presentation perspectives. This practical approach ensures that attendees immediately gain applicable skills that can enhance their trial advocacy.

Lecturers include leading experts in pathology and toxicology, as well as seasoned practitioners who specialize in working with expert witnesses, Cox said.

According to Cox, the curriculum covers essential topics including expert selection and preparation, pre-trial strategy development and advanced techniques for direct and cross-examination of experts. Lectures will address both the substantive aspects of working with technical experts and the strategic considerations that can make the difference between effective and ineffective expert testimony.

The course will provide 14 hours of general CLE credits in addition to two hours of ethics credits and one hour of professionalism well-being credit (pending North Carolina Bar approval).

The course fee is $1,499. Special pricing is available for Campbell Law alumni, solo practitioners and government employees. Registration is available at this link. Seating is limited, so early registration is recommended.

“This program represents a rare opportunity to learn from actual experts while practicing examination techniques in a supportive educational environment,” Cox explained. “The combination of expert instruction, practical exercises and real-world application makes this course invaluable for attorneys seeking to elevate their trial advocacy skills and improve their effectiveness in cases requiring expert testimony.”
