Campbell Law Student Awarded FTI Osborn Fellowship

RALEIGH, N.C. –Campbell Law School third-year student Jason Horrell has been awarded one of two Osborn Fellowship positions with the Fair Trial Initiative (FTI) in Durham, N.C. Horrell marks the first Campbell Law student to collect one of the highly-competitive FTI fellowship opportunities.

“Serving as an FTI Osborn Fellow will allow me to ensure that some of the most basic human and constitutional rights a capital defendant possesses are protected from unfair procedure and illegitimate biases, presumptions, and stereotypes,” said Horrell. “I am both honored and excited to be the first fellow from Campbell Law.

“I wholeheartedly believe that my education at Campbell Law School has prepared me to effectively and confidently defend those who are threatened with the criminal justice system’s most severe and irreversible form of punishment.“

FTI annually embarks on a national search to field a new class of law fellows, culminating in an extremely diverse and well-qualified pool of candidates from among the nation’s best law schools. Each candidate is committed to learning the best practices associated with capital trial preparation, while seeking and cultivating new methods to provide the highest quality of representation.

As an FTI Osborn Fellow, Horrell will provide in-depth research and preparation for cases that may result in a death sentence. He will serve as a member of the defense team, assisting with all investigative and legal tasks essential to establishing and orchestrating a thorough defense.

In addition to Horrell’s on-the-job training, he will have the opportunity to attend nationally-renowned death penalty defense seminars and training sessions across the country that will further cement and supplement the training that he will receive with FTI.

“Campbell Law has a proud tradition of developing advocates who are prepared to immediately delve into the demands of trial practice,” said Campbell Law Professor and Director of Advocacy Programs Dan Tilly. “Jason is a stellar example of a passionate advocate capable of immediately engaging in the development and preparation of a trial strategy and defense with the highest stakes. We are incredibly proud that he has been awarded an FTI Osborn Fellowship, and we know that this is just the start of what is sure to be a long and successful career.”
