RALEIGH, N.C. – A team of four Campbell Law students won the American Association for Justice (AAJ) Student Trial Advocacy Competition Regional Championship this past weekend, March 8-10. The Campbell Law team collected 18 of 21 possible ballots en route to collecting the title, cementing a spot in the National Finals in New Orleans, La., in April.

Third-year student Ashlee Burgess and second-year students Mary Claire Brown, Andrew Evans, and Harper Gwatney represented Campbell Law at the competition. Campbell Law Assistant Professor of Law Bryan Boyd and recent graduate Mary Aiken Barrow served as co-head coaches of the team.
“This team strived for excellence from day one,” said Boyd. “Their relentless work and dedication to their trial is an example any student or lawyer should follow. I couldn’t be more proud of them collectively and individually.”
The Campbell Law team swept through the preliminary rounds with a perfect 3-0 record, effectively topping two teams from Charleston Law and a third from Wake Forest. The Campbell Law team earned the top overall seed entering the semifinal round, owning the best overall record (3-0), highest number of ballots won (8-1) and the highest point total of the entire competition.
The semifinal round saw the Campbell Law team taking all three ballots against Charlotte School of Law to earn a spot in the final round. In the finals, the Campbell Law foursome defeated Wake Forest for the championship before a panel of nine scoring judges.
