RALEIGH — Campbell Law School is once again hosting two Justice John Paul Stevens Fellows this summer. Campbell Law is only the second law school in North Carolina to host the public interest fellowship.
Thanks to the generous support of Campbell Law alumnus Charlie Rawls ’82 and his wife, Deanne Maynard, with a matching grant from Campbell Law School, the law school will be administering two $5,000 stipends to first-year students to first-year students Mackenzie Leger ‘27 and Abigail Sholes ‘27 during the summer of 2025, said Assistant Dean of Career and Professional Development Mallory Underwood.
Leger is a 2024 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in history and peace, war and defense. She will be participating in an internship at the Brooklyn (New York) Defender Services’ Criminal Defense practice.

Sholes is a 2024 graduate of will be working as an intern with the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh’s Immigration Legal Services Program.

Underwood added, “It is an amazing opportunity to support our students who wish to make a direct impact in our communities in North Carolina and beyond and to fuel their journeys in the public interest.”
The John Paul Stevens Foundation, founded as a living legacy to the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, is dedicated to promoting public interest and social justice values in the next generation of American lawyers, according to its website.
“The Foundation oversees the Justice John Paul Stevens Public Interest Fellowship, which reflects Justice Stevens’ deep belief that a dynamic and effective justice system depends on a cadre of trained and committed lawyers doing public interest work,” the website states.
