Campbell Law to Honor Willoughby with Professionalism Award

Wake County District Attorney Colon Willoughby, a member of the 1979 Charter Class of the Campbell University’s School of Law, will be honored with the fourth annual Campbell Law School Professionalism Award on January 30. This award is given to an individual who exemplifies the noblest ideals and values of the legal profession. The Norman A. Wiggins School of Law will host a dinner to honor Willoughby at the Cardinal Club in Raleigh on Tuesday, January 30 at 6:30 pm. The banquet is supported by a grant from the North Carolina Chief Justice’s Committee on Professionalism. Invited guests include judges from the North Carolina Supreme Court, North Carolina Court of Appeals, other legal professionals, as well as Campbell Law faculty, staff, students and alumni. Willoughby credited his legal education at Campbell for establishing the high standard for his future professional endeavors. “I think that the professors, the administration and the students all had an attitude that the profession of law was a high calling and we should all do things that reflected in a positive way on the profession,” said Willoughby. After receiving his Juris Doctor at Campbell University in 1979, Willoughby served as a partner at Bass, Willoughby & Haywood from 1979-1986. He was appointed acting District Attorney of Wake County by Governor Hunt in 1983 and was elected District Attorney in 1986. Willoughby has served as the Wake County District Attorney since that time. Willoughby’s professional activities include past service as the President of the Wake County Academy of Trial Lawyers, Director of the Wake County Bar Association, Director of the North Carolina State Bar Council, and President of the North Carolina Conference of District Attorneys. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the National District Attorney’s Association. He has been a member of two legislative study commissions reviewing law enforcement issues and insanity verdicts, and he has served on the Governor’s Task Force on Racial and Religious Violence.
