Campbell Law to host debate on federal sentencing reform

RALEIGH, N.C. – Campbell Law will bring in two leading national experts for a debate on federal sentencing reform next Monday, April 11 at noon. Professors Douglas Berman and William Otis will take questions on federal sentencing from Campbell Law Assistant Professor Zac Bolitho, who will serve as moderator.

Area residents are invited to join the Campbell Law community in attending the presentation. Paid parking is available at the City of Raleigh Municipal Parking Deck across from the law school on West Morgan Street.

The event is a collaborative effort between the Federal Bar Association for the Eastern District of North Carolina, and the Campbell Law Federalist Society and Federal Bar Association student chapters.

“Federal sentencing reform is a very hot topic right now,” said Bolitho. “Professors Berman and Otis are two of the most well respected experts on this issue, and we are very fortunate to be hosting them at Campbell Law.”

Berman is the Robert J. Watkins/Procter & Gamble Professor of Law at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. He is widely recognized as the foremost expert on sentencing law, and he is the author of the popular Sentencing Law and Policy blog. Berman’s legal scholarship in the area of sentencing law has been cited by numerous courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States.

Otis is an adjunct professor at Georgetown Law School. He previously served in several high ranking government positions, including Special Counsel to President George H.W. Bush, Counselor to the Drug Enforcement Administration, and Chief of the Appellate Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia. Otis has testified before Congress as an expert on sentencing law matters, and he is a regular contributor to the Crime and Consequences blog.
