Campbell Law to host noted artist Thomas Sayre for talk, reception

RALEIGH, N.C. – Campbell Law School will host prominent Raleigh-based artist and sculptor Thomas H. Sayre for an artist’s talk and reception on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. in the law school’s Pope Foyer. Several pieces of Sayre’s selected works are currently on display at Campbell Law as a part of the institution’s new rotating collection of public art.

“Raleigh is fortunate to have such a fantastic artist reside and work in our community, and we are excited to host Mr. Sayre at Campbell Law,” said Campbell Law Dean J. Rich Leonard. “His works breathe new life into our facility, and selecting him as the first artist to feature in our new rotating collection was a no-brainer.”

Sayre’s first piece to be displayed at Campbell Law, “Maroon Bells, 29,” was presented by the Class of 2014 and adorns the main hallway connecting the grand lobby and Pope Foyer. It will remain on permanent display, and belongs to Sayre’s “Tree Painting” series. Each work in the series was created by capturing the energetic marks from welding splatter as they bounced across a white laminate surface. The series depicts the clusters of birch trees found at Alpine altitudes. Several other pieces from the series are featured elsewhere in Raleigh, including the North Carolina State Bar headquarters, the Raleigh Convention Center, the offices of Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, and Kilpatrick, Townsend and Stockton.

Sayre is a founding principal of Clearscapes, a multi-disciplinary design firm in Raleigh. Clearscapes is involved with building design, product design, and large and small scale artwork. Other local works of Sayre include the Raleigh “Fallen Officers Memorial,“ “Shimmer Wall“ at the Raleigh Convention Center, and the “World Wall” at Marbles Kids Museum. Sayre and his works have been featured in publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal. His works can be found throughout the United States, Asia, Canada, and across the world.
