Campbell Law to offer Certificate in Patent Law

RALEIGH — Campbell Law School will offer non-law students an opportunity to obtain a Certificate in Patent Law beginning with the fall 2014 semester. The certificate will provide members of the professional community a platform to gain in-depth understanding of intellectual property, patent law, and patent drafting. The certificate can be obtained in one academic year by taking one class in the fall and two in the spring.

Campbell Law will hold info sessions on the Certificate in Patent Law at the law school beginning at 3 p.m. on Monday, July 28 and Tuesday, July 29. Info session registration is available via this link.
“We are excited to offer the first program of this kind in North Carolina, and possibly the nation,” said Campbell Law Dean J. Rich Leonard. “Intellectual property is an expanding field, particularly in this region. Not every professional working in intellectual property needs a law degree, but this meaningful credential will provide a specific area of knowledge and study that will enable graduates to expand their areas of expertise.”
The Certificate in Patent Law appeals to an assortment of professionals working in and alongside the intellectual property field, including scientists, engineers, executives in technology-heavy industries, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and even practicing attorneys wanting to gain expertise in patent law. All participants will gain in-depth knowledge of patent law and the patent system. For those professionals who want to take the Patent bar exam, this course will help prepare for that exam. Inventors and entrepreneurs will benefit from being able to better draft their own patent applications.
The program curriculum is comprised of three courses totaling eight credit hours, and a one-day non-credit introductory workshop. Beginning with the fall semester, students will be required to take Intellectual Property. In the spring semester, students will study Patent Law and Patent Preparation & Prosecution to successfully complete the program.
Campbell Law Associate Professor Lucas Osborn will teach the Intellectual Property and Patent Law courses, while an experienced adjunct professor will lead the Patent Preparation & Prosecution course. Students pursuing the certificate will take the exact same classes as traditional Campbell Law students.
“We are excited to open our doors to the many professionals in the Research Triangle area who are hungry for a better understanding of this area of the law that continues to climb in importance” said Osborn, who directs Campbell Law’s Intellectual Property Program. “Our I.P. Program continues to grow in prominence, and this is a wonderful opportunity to open the value of our program to non-law students seeking specialized knowledge.”
