Campbell library program brings the campus to the community

Buies Creek, N.C.—Campbell University’s new luncheon program, First Friday, is a cross between a book club and a classroom, according to Dan Maynard, director of the Gilbert T. Stephenson Library at Campbell’s Lundy-Fetterman School of Business. Co-sponsored by the Stephenson and Carrie Rich Memorial libraries, Library Services and the School of Business, the luncheon meetings are held the first Friday of each month at the Keith Hills Country Club and Golf Course Snack Shop. Visitors may purchase lunch and participate in stimulating discussion on selected business-related materials presented by Campbell University economics professionals and other experts. The first meeting is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 5, from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.

“At first, the luncheon meetings were by invitation only, just an informal get together where prescribed readings were discussed by campus professors,” Maynard said. “But there has been so much interest created by ‘word of mouth,’ we’ve decided to make it an ongoing event and open it up to the Harnett County community.”

Reading materials are provided online through links to the Campbell University website and will deal with the writings of 18th century French liberal theorist and political economist Frédéric Bastiat. Bastiat, who maintained a deep distrust of government, believed its only purpose was to defend the rights of life, liberty and property.

“Entertaining? You bet,” said Maynard. “Fredric Bastiat not only makes economics comprehensible, his presentation of the discipline’s contrasting points of view is often laugh-out-loud funny.”

Guest lecturers include faculty experts from Campbell and across the state. The list includes Dr. Mark Stecbeck, professor of economics at Campbell’s Lundy-Fetterman School of Business; Dr. Derek Yonai, professor of economics and Lundy Chair; Dr. Paul Cwik, professor of economics at Mount Olive College, and other professionals. Meetings are open to any person interested in reading the material and listening to a guest lecturer’s remarks on the day’s topic.
