Campbell library to relocate to Wiggins building

Buies Creek, N.C.- Campbell’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law may have found a new home in Raleigh, but Wiggins and Kivett halls, once occupied by the law school, have found a new purpose. The buildings will become the location of the Campbell library currently located in the Carrie Rich Memorial building.

Built in 1925, the Carrie Rich building has grown to include two extensions, the Kivett Hall basement (for added storage) and the old Buies Creek Post Office, converted into a library annex in 1998. Yet, a total of 32,425 square feet still isn’t enough space to accommodate an ever expanding library collection as well as an expanding enrollment. Consequently when the administration decided to relocate the law school to Raleigh, plans to move the library into the law school space got immediately underway.

Library Director Borree Kwok said the relocation will not only add another 23,000 square feet of library space, but many new conveniences as well.

On the first floor of Wiggins Hall a cafe and comfortable 24-hour study area will be created. The space will also contain the circulation and reference desks, an information commons area, reference stacks, periodical reading area and new books display. All of these services are concentrated in one area for added convenience. Second floor study and seminar rooms have also been planned. Additionally, the second floor will be the location of the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences’ Drug Information Center. Curriculum materials, media center and computer lab will be located on the third floor of Wiggins Hall, along with additional study areas, a writing center and the four levels of book stacks located in Kivett.

“In the new library plans, we strive to make the facility a more inviting, comfortable and convenient venue for study, research and reading,” said Kowk.

Renovations on Wiggins and Kivett halls are set to begin this month. The Kivett renovation is expected be completed in January and Wiggins in April of 2010. The library will move to its new home in May 2010.
