Campbell mourns loss of alumnus, trustee, philanthropist Ed Gore

Brunswick County entrepreneur and Campbell University trustee, philanthropist and Distinguished Alumnus Ed Gore (’52) died in his sleep Tuesday night, according to his family.

Gore and his wife Dinah have been a key force in Campbell University’s expansion in recent years. Ed Gore has helped lead several capital campaigns, and the school’s football field, basketball arena, chapel bell tower and prayer room all bear his family’s name. The Gores are also co-founders of a major resource for students and faculty at Campbell — the Gore Center for Servant Leadership, which is dedicated to the development of several leadership skills through projects, internships, course work and other opportunities.

Gore also helped shape modern-day Brunswick County as a developer and philanthropist. A second-generation developer, he raised many of the structures at Sunset Beach on North Carolina’s coast and was involved in numerous other development projects in that area.

A member of Campbell College’s Class of 1952, Gore has served as chairman of the Campbell University Foundation, in addition to his role as trustee. The Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising and managing private support for the school.

In 2006, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus.  In 2007, Ed and Dinah Gore received Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees for their civic and professional contributions to Campbell.
