Buies Creek, N.C.–The Campbell University community is deeply saddened by the death of Dr. Lewis Fetterman, Jr., of Clinton, N.C., assistant professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Fetterman was killed in a car accident near Newton Grove on Saturday, March 15.”Dr. Fetterman was recognized as a dedicated teacher, very involved in his community, very challenging in the classroom,” said Dr. Thomas Holmes, associate dean for Academic Affairs for the School of Pharmacy. “He challenged his students in a way that builds character, as well as technical skills.”Described as an expert in the analysis of drug products, Dr. Fetterman graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Washington & Lee University. He went on to earn both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Purdue University. His research on chlorophyll and photosynthesis was published in the “Journal of the American Chemical Society.” He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Lambda Upsilon Chemistry Honor Society (chapter president 1975-1976).An active member of his community, Dr. Fetterman has served as an adult volunteer with the Tuscarora Council of the Boy Scouts of America for many years and was an enthusiastic supporter of the Clinton High School Band and Athletic boosters clubs. In addition, he was a member of the Clinton Rotary Club and has held several positions in his church, Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church of Clinton, including member of the Board of Deacons, the choir and the Finance Committee (chairman 1985).Prior to coming to Campbell in 2001, Dr. Fetterman held several positions with the family-owned Lundy Packing Company in Clinton, serving as president and general manager of the pork processing company from 1987-2000.Dr. Fetterman is survived by his wife Joni Fay Watts Fetterman; children, Lewis M. “Trey” Fetterman III, a student at North Carolina State University, and Charlotte Fetterman, a second-year pharmacy student at Campbell University; and by his parents Annabelle Lundy Fetterman and Lewis M. Fetterman, Sr.Visitation for Dr. Fetterman will be held Wednesday, March 19, from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. at Crumpler & Honeycutt Funeral Home, 118 Fayetteville Street in Clinton. The funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, March 20, at 2 p.m. at Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church, 201 Fayetteville Street in Clinton.
