Meet one of our student veterans

Staff Sgt. Steven Walther, a former Special Forces medic and a 2013 Campbell graduate and current MBA student, spoke with We Are Campbell about his military experience and why he chose to attend Campbell. Here is an excerpt from the edited interview, which you can read at We Are Campbell:

“Campbell is extremely military friendly. I did shop around when looking at colleges, and Campbell helped transferring military experience to credit, which is actually very difficult to find. Campbell was wonderful, the transition was easy, and they have an excellent Yellow Ribbon Program. I say thanks to them.”

BUIES CREEK — Victory Media, the premier media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has named Campbell University to the coveted Military Friendly Schools® list, which honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace U.S. military service members, veterans and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.

“Inclusion on the 2014 list of Military Friendly Schools® shows Campbell’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students,” said Sean Collins, vice president at Victory Media and a nine-year Navy veteran. “The need for education is growing and our mission is to provide the military community with transparent, world-class resources to assist in their search for schools.”

Now in its fifth year, the 2014 list of Military Friendly Schools® was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 10,000 schools nationwide approved for VA tuition funding.

More than 1,000 students currently enrolled at Campbell are using veterans benefits, said Joy Cox, the university’s director of veteran affairs.

Campbell offers educational programs for veterans on its main campus in Buies Creek and its extended campuses at Camp Lejeune, Fort Liberty/Pope Air Force and the Research Triangle Park. The distance education program has courses that provide flexibility to military professionals who are deployed or stationed overseas.

Each campus has a VA certifying official who serves as a liaison between veteran students and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Several offices across the university also work together to assist military personnel and veterans, and a Student Veteran’s Club helps incoming students with ties to the military.

“The selection as a Military Friendly School shows that Campbell University is committed to ensuring our veterans and their family members receive a quality education,” Cox said. “We have dedicated offices and personnel to work individually with our students using Veteran’s benefits. We know each person is different and will have questions that affect their decision on whether or not to attend Campbell. We work one on one with our students from acceptance to graduation.”

The survey results that comprise the 2014 Military Friendly Schools® list were independently tested by Ernst & Young LLP based upon the weightings and methodology established by Victory Media. Each year schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year via improved methodology, criteria and weightings developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board (AAB) consisting of educators from schools across the country.

The 1,868 colleges, universities and trade schools on this year’s list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience. These schools, including Campbell, have world-class programs and policies for student support on campus, academic accreditation, credit policies, flexibility and other services to those who served, Collins said.
