It’s one of the most anticipated athletic events in Campbell University history. Football officially returns to Buies Creek in the fall of 2008. But fans can help kick off the program this Thursday, Mar. 15, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. by attending the Football Stadium Groundbreaking Explosion at the future site on Highway 421.The free event is open to students, staff and members of the community. It will include a fireworks display and a performance by the University’s pep band. Hot beverages will be provided for guests.Last April, President Jerry Wallace announced that football would be returning to Campbell University after a 50 year absence. Campbell will compete on the NCAA Division I-AA (non-scholarship) level and will compete against other similar non-scholarship programs on the Division I and non-I levels.With the approval of the Executive Committee of the University’s Board of Trustees, construction on the new field and stadium will begin shortly to prepare for the Fighting Camels’ first home game set for Aug. 30, 2008 against Birmingham Southern University.Initial plans call for a practice field to be constructed by the fall of 2007, as the team begins formal practice. By the date of the first home game in 2008, stadium seating will be built for an estimated 1200 students and visitors. In addition, a field house, rest rooms and concession stand facilities, ticket booth and parking areas will also be constructed. Plans also call for additional stadium seating and a facility that would house the President’s box and press box.Head Coach Dale Steele believes the football stadium will be a great addition to Campbell’s thriving athletic program.”I think the new football program and stadium will be tremendously energizing for the university and entire community,” said Steele. “It will be a facility that everyone can be proud of and come to enjoy Campbell University football for years to come.”Bring a lawn chair and join us this Thursday night.
