Campbell presents the perfect Elizabethan evening

As part of the Artist Performance Series, Campbell University presents the Renaissance music of the Ensemble Chaconne with renowned mezzo-soprano Pamela Dellal, Monday, Jan.30, at 8 p.m. in Scott Concert Hall of the Rogers Fine Arts Center. Admission is free and open to the public. Titled “The Music of Shakespeare’s Plays,” the concert is performed on historical instruments with Peter H. Bloom on Renaissance flute, Carol Lewis on viola, and Olav Chris Henriksen on the lute. The program covers the gamut of emotion from Shakespeare’s plays in music—from love songs and comic antics to madness and tragedy. It focuses exclusively on Shakespeare’s time, the late 16th and early 17th century music that Shakespeare’s audiences would have heard. Among the many songs performed will be “Willow, Willow,” sung by Desdemona before her murder in “Othello,” “Where the Bee Sucks There Suck I,” Ariel’s song from “The Tempest, and “Go from My Window,” from Ophelia’s mad scene in “Hamlet.” During the concert, the performers will also provide entertaining commentary on the plays, the context for the music and the exotic historical instruments. Known for its performance of Renaissance and Baroque music, the Ensemble Chaconne is celebrating its 20th season. Guest artist Pamela Dellal has toured the U.S., Europe, Australia and Japan and has recorded for Arabesque Records, Artona, BMG and other companies. Her work has been praised by “The Washington Post,” “The New York Times,” and “The Boston Globe,” among others.
