Campbell rolls up its sleeves for MLK Day of Service

Buies Creek, N.C.— Dr. Martin Luther King defined life’s most important purpose as doing something for others. Monday, Jan. 17, is the national MLK Day of Service, and Campbell University is at the heart of King’s message, providing a multitude of opportunities in which to serve.

Campus Minister Faithe Beam, VISTA member Sara Acosta and Dr. Edward Fubara, professor of business, have coordinated the MLK Day of Service schedule in which anyone can take part. Among the activities are a blood drive coordinated with the Cape Fear Valley Health System Bloodmobile, Health Screenings sponsored by the Student National Pharmaceutical Association, creating greeting cards for deployed soldiers in partnership with Helping Hands for Heroes, participating in the Science Fair Buddies program for underprivileged students enrolled in the Baptist Fellowship of Angier’s after school program, visiting the elderly at nursing homes, and cleaning up the environment at local parks and recreation areas.

“The MLK Day of Service is an opportunity for students to reach out to our community not only to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, but also to take time to do good for someone else,” Acosta said. “The projects may seem small and insignificant to some, but for someone else they’re impossible.”

Acosta added that students can make a year-long commitment to tutor students at a local elementary, middle or high school by signing up with the “Caring Camels” student organization.
