Zachary Wright, senior at Campbell University from Bessemer City, N.C., was named an ACIS All-American Flag Football Official for the second year in a row.”I felt vindicated by winning it for a second time,” said Wright, “This solidified my abilities in my own mind.”Wright recently officiated the National Flag Football Tournament held in New Orleans, LA.”This is the highest honor a collegiate official can obtain,” said Andy Shell, Director of Campus Recreation. “Only a handful of people obtain it a second time.”Wright officiates every recreation sport Campbell has to offer, but primarily works with flag football, basketball and softball.”I became involved in officiating here on campus and enjoyed it so much. I continued doing it and wanted to become the best I could be,” said Wright. To win this award, a person must be one of the top 12 officials throughout the national tournament. It generally takes a couple years of officiating smaller tournaments to gain the necessary knowledge and experience to get to the national tournament. “Once you get to the national tournament, you have to be a better official than the rest,” said Wright. “This is determined by a committee of NIRSA affiliated professionals who select the top 12 for that year.”Wright hopes to get his certification to move up to higher levels of competition.”I would not have been able to accomplish any of this without the training and support I received from Andy Shell and the entire Campus Recreation Department at Campbell,” said Wright.
