Campbell strives to heighten awareness of poverty’s impact

Buies Creek, N.C.— Statistics show 17 percent of the population of Harnett County is living in poverty, a disturbing figure when you compare Harnett with other counties in the state and the nation. But to most people, 17 is just a number. It doesn’t describe what living in poverty really means. The Office of the Campus Minister at Campbell University has created an event designed to teach students about what it means to be poor, Poverty Awareness Week, April 4-8.

Through a series of activities scheduled for each day, including panel discussions, a letter writing campaign, A Day Without Shoes, a health fair, a service event at the Beacon Rescue Mission and many others, students will discover things they never knew about poverty.
