Buies Creek, N.C.—Campbell University kinesiology major Kelsey Holloman has been named president-elect of the Student Majors Association (SMA) of the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NCAAHPERD). The NCAAHPERD is the third largest state branch of the national AAHPERD.
The NCAAHPERD is an advocate for healthier children through progressive reform of health and physical education policy, keeping members informed and providing ways for teachers and the public to get involved. Member organizations include the Dance Association for North Carolina Educators, the North Carolina Association for Athletic Education, North Carolina Association for Advanced Health Education, the Physical Education Association and the Student Majors Association. Each association recognizes excellence annually through grants for researchand initiatives in the classroom and scholarships for college students preparing for careers in these professions.
The Student Majors Association strivesto provide opportunities for students from different universities to grow in the areas of leadership, networking, fellowship and research who have chosen AAHPERD professions as their career path.
Holloman first became involved with SMA when she attended an NCAAHPERD convention in Winston-Salem in 2009.
“I learned a lot about the organization and what SMA does for students,” Holloman said. “The following year at the 2010 NCAAHPERD Convention I ran for president of the state SMA and won!”
Holloman also received the Nathan Taylor Dodson Scholarship from NCAAHPERD at the 2010 convention. She now works with other students to organize retreats, socials and lectures that educate students about NCAAHPERD,its mission and opportunities.
