Campbell student publications honored at NCCMA Awards

The Campbell Times placed second in the state in the Small Schools category for best student newspaper in the 2010 College Media Awards competition sponsored by the North Carolina College Media Association (NCCMA). Honored at a ceremony held Feb. 19 at Appalachian State University in Boone, the Times led the University of North Carolina at Asheville and Greensboro College. The Small Schools category includes colleges with 6,000 readers or fewer. Other categories included Literary Magazine and Yearbook.Campbell’s Pine Burr yearbook, also received an Honorable Mention in the competition.

Campbell graduate Andy Spechtwas also recognized for outstanding reporting on stimulus money for the News & Observer’s suburban papers the Garner-Clayton Record and The Herald. Specht, who took second place, is a 2010 graduate who studied journalism at Campbell.

The biggest surprise of the day was Campbell’s online newspaper placing fifth in the Best of Show competition, a significant achievement given that the site was only launched in fall 2010. Web master Tyler Merry created thecampbelltimes.com site using a WordPress blogging approach. The site features digital sound and visual recordings along with online news and pictures generated by Campbell University students.
