Campbell students learn about new pharmacy technology

John Davis and Stacy Stein of Centice Corp. spoke at Campbell University on Sept. 16, 2008. They presented new technology, the Pass Rx, to Dr. Bob Cisneros’ medication error class. The Pass Rx is a device which helps to identify possible prescription errors by using patented proprietary sensors to “beam” the contents of a prescription bottle containing medication and then compares the findings to a database. If the medication in the bottle, identified by Pass Rx, doesn’t match the information obtained from a previously scanned barcode on the label, a warning is signaled. The whole process takes about five seconds. “This was great for the students to see because technology is critical in the area of patient safety and the prevention of medication errors,” said Cisneros. “If they learn about this technology now, it will help them in the future when they become pharmacists. Their number one goal is patient safety.
