Buies Creek, N.C.- Campbell University piano students get to reverse roles when they slip into teachers’ shoes to complete a Piano Pedagogy internship. The internship requires them to teach free piano lessons to students ages 6 through 12th grade for a series of 28 lessons. A piano recital will highlight each section of lessons.
The lessons begin August 31 and are offered for two semesters as the college students’ “student teaching” experience, according to Dr. Richard McKee, associate professor and director of Piano Studies. The lessons focus on reading music, performance and theory. McKee said the internship is an integral part of the Piano Pedagogy track at Campbell.
“The title of the course for the college students is Supervised Teaching of Piano,” McKee said. “The college students, who have already had two semesters of Piano Pedagogy or learning how to teach piano students, get teaching experience under the supervision of an experienced piano professor.”
Lessons are scheduled according to the mutual convenience of the teacher and the student, and a recital performance is required at the end of each semester.
“The Supervised Teaching of Piano course is excellent training for the college students,” McKee said. “It is a course that was in place when I joined the music faculty in 1994, and it has a proven track record in the preparation of students for the Piano Pedagogy field.”
The classes are currently full; however those individuals who are interested in the program may contact Dr. Richard McKee at 910.893.1502 or 800.334.4111, ext. 1502.
