Campbell to hold second annual MLK Day of Service

Buies Creek–Campbell University students are gearing up for the second annual Martin Luther King Day of Service project to be held Monday, Jan. 21. The purpose of the event is to give students an opportunity to make a difference in someone else’s life.”In keeping with Congress’s 1994 King Holiday and Service Act the Campbell community will again make the holiday ‘a day on, not a day off,'” said Dr. Edward Fubara, coordinator of the event. “It is also a chance to extend our learning and discovery beyond the boundaries of the classroom.”The Cape Fear Valley Health System Bloodmobile will be on campus to give students, faculty and staff an opportunity to donate blood. They can also register to be a bone marrow donor; assist with voter registration; volunteer with a senior care agency; assist in clean-up at Raven Rock State Park in Lillington; and visit and entertain residents at Harnett Manor.Last year’s event was a great success, added Fubara. Approximately 750 volunteers turned out for the MLK Day of Service. A total of 46 units of blood were collected from 64 donors and 60 people responded to the bone marrow drive. In addition, 40 people turned out to help residents of Harnett and approximately 25 other counties to register to vote and, with additional support of the Bob Barker Company in Fuquay-Varina, members of Campbell’s Physical Plant staff and Campbell students participated in a drive to collect donations for the Harnett County Battered Women’s Shelter, the Cumberland County Homeless Shelter and the Support Our Troops Drive. First-year pharmacy students also collected items to send directly to the 82nd Airborne White Falcon unit and raised over $425 to help with the shipping costs.”It is an opportunity to serve Him by serving the least of His brothers,” Fubara said. “To paraphrase Dr. King, everyone can be great because everyone can serve. For more information visit the Campbell Web site at http://web.campbell.edu/mlkdayofservice/.
