Campbell to hold Walter Barge Honors Colloquium

Buies Creek, N.C.—Campbell University will hold the annual Walter Barge Honors Colloquium on Wed., April 13, at 5 p.m. in the Kivett building, Room 206. Established in honor of the late Dr. Walter S. Barge, former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Colloquium showcases the work of outstanding honors students in a presentation and question and answer format. Admission is free and open to the public.

Under the direction of faculty mentors, students present research they have conducted in a variety of fields, from politics and history to the latest scientific developments. This year’s presenters include Cynthia Hutchings, mentored by Campbell’s School of Education Professor Dr. Lorae Roukema; Erin Byrd, mentored by Science Professor Dr. John Bartlett; and Stephanie Meadows, also mentored by Bartlett.

Hutchings’ presentation compares the comprehensive needs of mainstream and English as a Second Language students in a middle school setting. Byrd’s presentation will describe how establishing a volunteer program at the Harnett County Animal Shelter reduced the instances of euthanasia. And Meadows’ presentation deals with student perceptions of a plus/minus grading system at Campbell University. A question and answer session will follow the presentations.

“The Colloquium is an opportunity for our Campbell Honors Interdisciplinary Studies graduates to really display what they have learned,” said Dr. Ann Ortiz, co-director of the Honors Program with Dr. Bert Wallace, chairman of the Theater Department. “It also brings in members of the community to join us in celebrating their accomplishments.”
