Buies Creek, N.C.-Campbell University will host scientists and science educators throughout the state as the site of the 2012 annual meeting of the North Carolina Academy of Science (NCAS).
Founded in 1902, the NCAS is the only statewide organization dedicated to promoting science education, scientific research and public awareness of science in North Carolina.
“We are extremely honored to be selected as the site of the 2012 meeting,” said Dr. Mark Hammond, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Members of our science faculty have been participants in the administration, programs and activities of the academy because of its focus on science education. We are looking forward to having this event on our campus.”
The NCAS is structured to include opportunities for graduate, undergraduate, middle and high school students, faculty and senior scientists. It sponsors research grants, workshops, a lecture series and various competitions at both the district and state levels.
“A primary mission of the academy is to bring together senior scientists, faculty and students to foster and support research and interactions in all scientific disciplines,” said Dr. Jean-Luc Scemama, president of the NCAS.
Highlights of the annual NCAS meetings are poster and research presentations, symposia and workshops dealing with often groundbreaking research in a variety of scientific disciplines.
