Buies Creek, N.C.—Campbell University professors Nathan Salsbury and Dr. Michael Ray Smith share the secrets to writing winning S.A.T. essays at a summer writing camp, Get the Edge for the SAT, to be held at Campbell, Friday, May 28, and Saturday, May 29. The price of the course is $100. Students may register on the day of the event at 4:30 p.m. at Strickland Residence Hall on campus.
“The event helped me become a better writer and helped me really pay attention to details,” said Kia Dikes, Zebulon. She participated in the 2009 camp.
DiAndre Parker, Raleigh, agreed with Dikes, on the benefit of the camp.
“It made me realize what I could do if I could plan things more,” he said. “Normally I would just sit down and write, but planning things out made me do better.”
English Professor Salsbury and Smith, professor of Communication Studies, are seasoned writers whose backgrounds include years of classroom and publishing experience.
Smith is the author of numerous books and articles. He received a Ph.D. from Regent University and also did graduate work at Shippensburg University, where he was named a Distinguished Alumnus in 2008. He has presented workshops on writing in the U.S. and overseas, including a weeklong seminar on magazine writing for Magazine Training International. His book on 19th century journalist John McLean Harrington is due out in 2011.
Salsbury, a lecturer/instructor at Campbell since 2000, has taught Freshman Composition and Surveys in American and British Literature. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Carolina University and a Master of Arts from North Carolina State University. Salsbury is well known for his wit and humor and he said he plans to sing at least once during the camp.
The course requires students to attend classes in residence, participate in workshops and conduct peer reviews. Certificates will be awarded to every participant on Saturday, May 29, at the awards banquet at Marshbanks Cafeteria. Awards for first, second and third places in the writing competition will also be presented at the banquet.
