Boone pharmacist and Campbell University Board of Trustee Corey D. Furman received the 2016 M. Keith Fearing, Jr., Community Pharmacy Practice Award from Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences on Tuesday, April 26.
“Upon learning Corey was an Eagle Scout, I realized Lord Baden-Powell [author of The Scout Law] was describing Corey when he said a scout was trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent,” shared Daniel Teat, former assistant dean of admissions, who accepted Furman for admission into the program in 1991.
The award is given in memory of Keith Fearing, a 1941 Campbell graduate who established the first pharmacy in Dare County in 1947, and served as a founding member of Campbell University’s then School of Pharmacy. The Fearing Award has been presented annual since 1997, recognizing pharmacists who have made outstanding contributions to their profession and community.
During the award luncheon, Lib Fearing, wife of the late Keith Fearing, was in attendance to share details about what pharmacy meant to her husband and the importance of servant leadership in the community.
Furman is the pharmacist manager of Boone Drug, Inc., an independent chain of 18 retail pharmacies located in North Carolina, Tennessee, and South Carolina. He received his doctor of pharmacy degree from Campbell University in 1995 and served as a pharmacist for Pitt County Memorial Hospital upon graduating. In 2000, Furman became the pharmacist manager of Boone Drugs, Inc.
An active member of the Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Boone, Furman is a deacon and teaches Sunday School weekly. He has extensive short-term medical mission experience in Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Sudan, Afghanistan, Peru, Haiti, and Southern Lebanon. He is an Eagle Scout and completed the Order of the Arrow.
Furman is married to Campbell alumna, Ashley Riggan Furman, PharmD ’96. They have two sons, James and John.
