BUIES CREEK — Campbell University’s Opera Theatre Department will present Mozart’s one-act opera “The Impresario” and Act II of Johann Stauss’ operetta “Die Fledermaus” on Tuesday, March 31.
“The Impressario” will be performed at 12:30 p.m. and “Die Fledermaus” at 8 p.m. Both shows are free and open to the public, and will be held in Scott Concert Hall in the Taylor Bott Rogers Fine Arts Building on Campbell’s main campus.
Both shows will be sung in English and performed by voice students in Campbell’s music department. Director of the shows is Sally Thomas, associate professor of music and director of vocal studies.
“The Impressario” features an updated script by Judith Bruno, adjunct professor of voice and stage director for Campbell Opera Theatre. The adapted show tells the story of a fledgling opera company desperately trying to get off the ground in Harnett County, North Carolina. Look out for backstage shenanigans, oversized egos, and dueling sopranos.
Act II of Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” (translation: “The Bat”) is a party scene at the palatial home of Prince Orlovsky, a bored nobleman who has made a bet with Falke that he cannot be entertained or even made to smile. In order to win the bet (and a lot of money), Falke concocts an elaborate scheme involving jailbirds, mistaken identities and a mysterious countess from Hungary.
Accompanists for the production will be Catherine Hamner, staff accompanist, and Rose Murray, a student of Richard McKee, acting chair of the Fine Arts Department and director of piano studies. Risa Poniros, adjunct professor of voice, serves as assistant to the director. Other music faculty members will be making guest appearances.
