Buies Creek – Campbell University will host its first Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 15, 2007.Campbell students, faculty and staff are encouraged to set aside at least two hours that day to help someone else.On-campus activities may include organizing food drives, bone marrow/organ donor registration, or workshops on civil rights.Off-campus, volunteers may spend time at a senior center, help serve food at a homeless shelter or sort goods at a food pantry.In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the King Holiday as a national day of volunteer service. Instead of a day off from work or school, Congress asked Americans of all backgrounds and ages to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy by turning community concerns into citizen action. Campbell student groups and clubs are encouraged to take on service projects together or work as individuals.To participate, determine which service activity you will participate in and complete a 2007 MLK Day of Service registration form at the InfoBooth of the Wallace Student Center. Registration will grant you access to a comprehensive list of volunteer opportunities and ensures you are covered by a liability insurance policy while you are volunteering.Shuttles may be available to transport students to selected off-campus locations for volunteer service activities.
