Dr. William M. Downs begins his term today as Campbell’s sixth president in its 137-year history.
Downs brings more than three decades of distinguished experience in higher education, underscored by significant leadership roles and notable academic accomplishments. As he assumes the executive position at Campbell, Downs is focused on building upon the University’s legacy of success.
“My first and most important goal is to reaffirm Campbell’s commitment to its mission of graduating students with exemplary academic and professional skills; students who are prepared for purposeful lives and meaningful service,” said Downs. “Now is the time to roll up our sleeves — Campbell will build on its foundation of faith as we welcome new generations of students eager to learn boldly, lead faithfully and grow in a community where values are put into action.”

Previously, Downs served as the 13th president of Gardner-Webb University, where he was instrumental in enhancing academics, athletics and student life through a variety of transformational initiatives. During his tenure, he oversaw significant capital projects, including the construction of a state-of-the-art cafeteria, a modern amphitheater and an indoor baseball facility, as well as renovations to crucial academic and athletic facilities.
Under Downs, Gardner-Webb’s athletic programs achieved significant success, winning championships in basketball, football, tennis and soccer. Academically, Downs spearheaded modernization of the general education curriculum, improving accessibility and increasing enrollment, all while upholding a strong faith-based identity.
Prior to his presidency at Gardner-Webb, Downs was dean of the Thomas Harriott College of Arts and Sciences, a professor of political science and the W. Keats Sparrow distinguished chair in liberal arts at East Carolina University from 2014 to 2019.

Dr. J. Bradley Creed closed his chapter as president on Monday, marking the end of a decade-long tenure leading Campbell and a three-decade career in higher education leadership.
“It has been an honor to work alongside Dr. Creed during the time we’ve served together at Campbell, and though we are sad to see him go, we have absolute confidence that Dr. Downs will lead a positive new chapter in the history of this great institution,” said Board of Trustees Chairman Gene Lewis III. “Campbell University is poised for transformative success, and it has become increasingly clear that Dr. Downs’ ideas, experience and determination will drive Campbell to new heights within the ever-changing landscape of higher education.”
