BUIES CREEK – Dr. George Braswell, senior professor of World Religions at Campbell University, is leading a seminar this fall on Mormonism and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
On Sept. 24, Braswell will begin the day by presenting Mormon beliefs about marriages for eternity, eternal families, baptism for the dead and genealogies, Jesus and salvation, missions and temple ceremonies. In the afternoon, he will moderate a panel discussion with Mormon leadership from churches in the Raleigh area.
The seminar will be held on the Buies Creek Campus in the Taylor Hall of Religion. Registration will open at 9:30 a.m., with the first session beginning at 10. The second session will run from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The cost for lunch is $12.
“Latter-day Saints have experienced phenomenal growth in recent years, now having the second highest growth rate among religions in the United States,” Braswell said. “Pastors and church leaders need to know how their beliefs are similar and are different from traditional Christian beliefs.”
Dr. Andy Wakefield, Divinity School Dean, said the seminar is important, as learning about other world religions is “a must for Christian ministers today.”
“Even in the most rural areas, we find ourselves living in a global world, surrounded by neighbors from other cultures and religious backgrounds,” Wakefield said. “To share Christ’s love appropriately and effectively, we must understand their world views.”
