Who is Valpo?
Campbell University’s football team will face Valparaiso at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Barker-Lane Stadium to open its play in the Pioneer Football League, the nation’s only non-scholarship, football-only NCAA Football Championship Subdivision conference.
The 11-team league includes several of Campbell’s peer institutions and some of the most academically prestigious colleges and universities in the nation, including Davidson College, Stetson University, Butler University, Marist University, the University of San Diego, Valparaiso University, and several other visible and respected schools.
Here’s what to know about the first league opponent the Camels face this season:
Valparaiso University, known informally as Valpo, is a private university located in Valparaiso, Indiana, about an hour southeast of Chicago. The coed four-year institution, founded in 1859, enrolls more than 4,000 students and consists of five undergraduate colleges, a graduate school, and a law school.
It is the largest independent Lutheran university in the United States and is home to the second largest collegiate chapel in the world, The Chapel of the Resurrection.
The Valparaiso Crusaders’ athletic teams compete in NCAA Division I in the Horizon League. In football, they are one of original charter members of the Pioneer Football League, formed in 1991, and play at Brown Field.
