Buies Creek, N.C.-Campbell University’s intramural field, located just off U.S. 421 near Keith Hills, was one of 55 youth athletic fields in the nation to be selected for renovation by the Kellogg Frosted Flakes Field Renovation Program.
The 100 semi-finalists were selected from thousands of fields submitted and chosen on the basis of feasibility of the field makeover, location and age of the field, use of the field, number of events that take place on the field and other criteria. Members of the community could also cast their votes for a particular field in a show of support. All tolled, Harnett County community members voted 25,657 times for the Campbell intramural field.
The approximate retail value of Kellogg’s commitment is up to $15,000 per field makeover, however the actual cost of the makeover will be determined by the specific needs of each field.
“We are honored as a department to receive this gift from Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes,” said Andy Shell, director of Student Athletics. “We also want to thank the administration and the Harnett County community for their support and encouragement.”
The renovations are projected are expected to start within the week, Shell said. All projects, except those delayed by weather or uncontrollable circumstances, are expected to be completed by the end of 2009. Brickman Landscaping and Sports Turf division are completing the field makeovers. Brickman has more than 60 years experience in the turf management and field optimization business. Notable clients include Major League Baseball, the Olympics in Sydney, Athens and Beijing and baseball’s World Cup in Taiwan. Brickman will work closely with each field’s contacts to discuss proper upkeep and maintenance of the field.
A spokesman for Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes said the company is committed to helping provide youth across the country the opportunity to stay active and be at their very best by providing better athletic settings. The strong interest in the program demonstrates the need for initiatives that encourage healthy lifestyles, build stronger communities and help provide better places for youth to stay active.
