Campus Ministry Update

By Kelly Rhodes, Campus MinistryOn April 9, 2008, Campus Crusade for Christ held its 2nd annual “1 Night” celebration. Amy Stocks, Nathan Blake, and the Crusade servant team coordinated the event that took place on Fellowship Commons and featured the worship leaders from each of four ministry groups. Students from Monday Night Bible Study, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Baptist Student Union and Crusade led over 150 people, including students who joined them from Barton College, through song and scripture. The worship service lasted almost an hour and was followed by a short concert from local favorites Friar Cook, whose group members lead worship for FCA and Crusade. Students were able to fellowship by preparing s’mores and enjoying the spring weather. Overall, the night was a success in carrying out its stated purpose to celebrate “1 God, 1 Body, 1 Night.” The Ministry of A.C.T.S. (All Committed True Saints) sponsored a similar night just one week later. Their “outdoor bash” on April 15 was also held on Fellowship Commons and featured song, scripture, and testimony from students involved in various campus ministry groups. Michael Davies, one of the members of the M.A.C.T.S. leadership, stated, “God isn’t listening to the sound of our voices but the motive of our hearts.” A mime team performed toward the end of the program to cap off the evening. The outdoor bash was a chance to bring together members of different ministries and to celebrate unity in diversity. On Saturday, April 12, 2008, the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina held its annual Spring Fling in Carter Gym on the campus of Campbell University. Brittany Leah, the Community Projects Coordinator for Baptist Student Union (BSU) at Campbell led in the organization efforts along with Campus Minister, Faithe Beam, the Campus Ministry Graduate Assistant, Chad Reed, and a team of folks from the Baptist State Convention. The day’s events began with registering over 300 participants, including campers who have developed mental disabilities and their caregivers. Gaylord the Camel stopped by as Chad Reed, Amanda Rodriguez, the BSU Worship Coordinator, and other volunteers led the campers in songs. After doing the Hokey Pokey with campers and meeting new friends, Gaylord departed, only to be followed later by a few of Campbell’s own basketball players. Campers played games such as the bean-bag toss and bowling for small prizes, made beaded bracelets and wind-socks as crafts, and had a picnic-style lunch. After lunch, Jake Capin, Cole Dewey, Junard Hartley, and Kyle Verjraska from the Campbell men’s basketball team showed off some moves for the campers and invited them to come down from the stands for a shoot-around. Campers were thrilled to meet the players and get some pointers from them. The players signed autographs before a final sing-along to end the day. Twenty student-volunteers from various campus ministry and student groups helped make the day a success.
