Career Center Holds Discussion on Alternative Careers for Graduates

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Campbell Law School Career Center hosted Susan Gainen on Tuesday, Feb. 21, for a discussion on alternative careers for law school graduates. A consultant with Pass the Baton, LLC., Gainen spoke to a large assembly of Campbell Law students on the type of employment opportunities that exist for law school graduates who are interested in positions outside the traditional career path for lawyers.

“Law students and all law-trained people need to think about how best to use the skills of their legal training, and how best to serve clients whether they are going to be in traditional law practice or in non-traditional legal jobs,” said Gainen. “They need to think carefully about what they do, what they know, and how they are going to use those tools regardless of the economy.”

Gainen spoke at length on methods that law school graduates can use to better market themselves to potential employers, as well as how valuable and appealing their skill set is to an array of diverse job fields. She showed students how graduates can highlight their successes and strengths in research, analysis, and writing skills, as well as oral advocacy ability, when searching for employment outside the realm of practicing law.

Gainen also offered thoughts on messaging strategies for resumes and cover letters. In addition, she stressed the importance of proactive behavior, networking, showing ability, and the bonuses that come with a law education background.
