Christian Century editor to deliver Religion Department’s Staley Lecture 2/3

BUIES CREEK — The Campbell University Department of Religion and Philosophy will hold its 16th Annual Lecture Series Tuesday, Feb. 3, and feature the Rev. John Buchanan, editor and publisher of The Christian Century magazine.
Rev. Buchanan’s lecture — “Known Knowns, Known Unknowns, Unknown Unknowns and the Challenge of Religious Diversity” — will begin at 7 p.m., and be held in Butler Chapel. It’s open to the public.
In addition to serving as editor and publisher of The Christian Century, Rev. Buchanan is the author of “A New Church for a New World,” “Being Church, Becoming Community,” and “Sermons for the City.” He also has pastored the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, Illinois, and other Presbyterian churches in Columbus, Ohio; Lafayette, Indiana; and Dyer, Indiana. 
Rev. Buchanan received an A.B. in government from Franklin and Marshall College, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and a Master of Divinity from the University of Chicago Divinity School/Chicago Theological Seminary. He is the recipient of nearly a dozen honorary degrees. He served as moderator of the 208th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., and as a member of its General Assembly from 1996 through 1999.
The Staley Distinguished Scholar Lecture Program sponsors the Department of Religion and Philosophy Annual Lecture Series. Its purpose is to bring scholars to Campbell from different areas in the field of religion to stimulate scholarly inquiry, learning and practical application in the academic discipline of religion. The founder of the Staley Distinguished Scholar Lecture Program is Thomas F. Staley, a co-founder of Reynolds and Company, which later merged with Dean Witter to form Dean Witter-Reynolds.
