BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell Business students Adam Clough and Christian Jones were recently declared winners of the Fall 2016 Stock Market Game (SMG). Clough and Jones placed first in North Carolina among 34 teams in the College Division by beating the S&P 500 Growth Index by 19.1%

“SMG is among one of many opportunities afforded to our students to enhance their financial literacy,” said Campbell Business Associate Dean for External Relations & Professor of Business Dr. Shahriar Mostashari. “Making thoughtful and informed investment decisions are the key to their financial wellbeing in the future.”

An enterprise of the Securities Industry & Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), the Sock Market Game program is an online simulation of the global capital markets that engages students in the world of economics, investing and personal finance and prepares them for financially independent futures.

Six Campbell Business teams of one to three students in ECON 453-Money & Banking were tasked to develop a successful investment portfolio by investing their virtual $100,000 in real world stocks, bonds, IPOs and mutual funds traded on NYSE and NASDAQ exchanges. To satisfy the course requirement, each team was required to trade (buy and sell including short sell and short cover transactions) on at least five different trading dates during a 10-week period. Students utilized class lectures, textbook materials and a broad range of print and online sources to prepare their bi-weekly investment reports and submit the print out of their portfolio holdings and transaction history.

More than 16 million students have participated in the Stock Market Game since its inception in 1977. More than 600,000 students take part every school year across the country. For more information visit http://www.smgww.org/.
