Buies Creek, N.C.—Campbell University professor Dr. Michael Ray Smith has contributed essays on Internet radio, church public relations, news bias and other topics to a new book featuring writers from nearly 40 universities across the nation. Edited by Quentin J. Schultze and Robert H. Woods Jr., “Understanding Evangelical Media” is an InterVarsity book that examines popular music, worship music and media, television, film, periodicals, books Internet church drama, comics, gaming, theme parks, advertising, public relations and merchandising and other topics. Smith, who is a professor of Mass Communication at Campbell is using the book in his fall honors class that explores ethics in mass media.Authors of the book are grouped according to cultural and ethical perspective such as Catholic and Jewish viewpoints.A former journalist, Smith spent a decade working as a reporter and editor of newspapers including Gannett Co., owner of USA Today, Lancaster newspapers, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and others.
