Community Law Clinic ribbon cutting set for Friday

RALEIGH, N.C. – Campbell Law will ceremonially cut the ribbon and welcome public and civic leaders to its Community Law Clinic this Friday, Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. The celebratory event will take place at the clinic’s home base, the historic Horton-Beckham-Bretsch House, at 11 South Blount Street in downtown Raleigh.

“This is an exciting day for our school,” said Campbell Law Dean J. Rich Leonard. “True to the law school’s mission, we believe we are providing critically-needed legal services to citizens who desperately need them to move their lives forward.”

In addition to Leonard, City of Raleigh Mayor Pro Tem Kay Crowder, clinic director Ashley Campbell, Urban Ministries of Wake County Executive Director Dr. Peter Morris, and Campbell Law Professor William Woodruff will provide brief remarks.

The Community Law Clinic, which opened with the beginning of the current academic year, provides backup legal services free of charge to area non-profit agencies and their clients when legal issues complicate such important steps as acquiring housing or employment. The clinic supports organizations like StepUp Ministry, Urban Ministries of Wake County and the Raleigh Rescue Mission among others. A grant of $150,000 from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation that has been matched by other donors is making this effort possible.

The Community Clinic is part of a roster of Campbell Law clinical support programs designed to help in key social matters such as bankruptcy (Stubbs Bankruptcy Clinic), as well as the elderly (Senior Law Clinic) and youth who find themselves in trouble (Restorative Justice Clinic).
